Saint-Tropez

The eternal myth

Just one last bend and the pink-orange village appears… The rest is magic, and the fascination continues. The soul of Saint-Tropez, a city of art, culture and tradition, doubles up in summer with a playful, festive facet, in a singular, myth-making alchemy.

Iconic and inspiring destination

Saint-Tropez is both Provence and the Côte d’Azur, a world-famous dream destination offering the best of Provencal light, color and tradition, as well as the chic, relaxed and hectic lifestyle that is the Côte d’Azur. Its authenticity will appeal to sea lovers as well as culture and history enthusiasts. Saint-Tropez is also the home of international tourism, where service and excellence are the watchwords of a unique and exclusive experience. The village will always amaze you with its quality establishments and exceptional expertise.

An exceptional heritage

Natural or historical, it’s one of the village’s major attractions. From the Citadelle, home to the Museum of Maritime History, you’ll discover – in addition to an exceptional panorama – the emblematic ochre and gold bell tower, the domes of the Chapelles de la Miséricorde and du Couvent, the village’s fortified towers, the setting sun over the lighthouse and, in winter, the snow-capped peaks of the Southern Alps. What a pleasure it is to stroll through the village’s narrow streets and pretty squares, to share in the friendly atmosphere, imbued with the scents of the Provencal market, before reaching the mythical port via the Ponche.

Artists of light

When he dropped anchor here in 1892, Signac was immediately dazzled by the light: “I’m not stopping over, I’m settling in! Seduced by the area, Signac bought a house and turned it into his studio, La Hune, inviting numerous painters: Cross, Matisse, Derain, Marquet. The Musée de l’Annonciade devotes magnificent exhibitions to them. They were later joined by so many prestigious writers, including Colette, Eluard and Sagan… The more unusual Maison des Papillons is also well worth a visit. The Musée de la Gendarmerie et du Cinéma (Gendarmerie and Film Museum), which evokes the saga of the gendarmes with Louis de Funès and Michel Galabru, the unforgettable Romy Schneider and then, icon among icons, Brigitte Bardot, sublime in Et dieu créa la femme.

Remarkable events

The sea, the sea, the sea… the port and Gulf of Saint-Tropez are the scene of top-notch nautical events such as Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez and the French Sail GP event, featuring the world’s fastest sailing boats. The village also offers other attractive events: music festivals, internationally renowned art exhibitions, sporting events (tennis, pétanque), the Paradis Porsche, the Braderie and Christmas festivities, not forgetting the Bravades, during which the people of Saint-Tropez honor their patron saint.

A little background

Born in Pisa, the officer Torpès, Nero’s palace steward, converted to Christianity and refused to recant his new religion to the emperor. Beheaded, his body was placed in a boat with a dog and a rooster and abandoned at the mouth of the Arno. Legend has it that, with the Ligurian current, the boat landed in the gulf of Heraclea, which took the name of Saint-Tropez. In 1558, to combat the Barbary pirates, a local militia was appointed by the community council and led by a Capitaine de Ville, a deliberation ratified by the Kings of France. Agriculture, fishing, coastal shipping and shipyards ensured the city’s prosperity. The artists of the late 19th and, above all, 20th centuries ushered in a new golden age, preluding the city’s popularity as a tourist destination.
